War Memorial 505th PIR

In La Gare is a war memorial for the killed comrades of William H. "Bill" Tucker. On the morning of June 8, 1944, the 505th PIR arrived in Fresville, after previous fighting in the region. A plan was put in place to drive the enemy out along the track and into the station at Grainville. The soldiers split into two teams. The first team with Sergeant Sandefur and 6 men were all shot by a German marksman at the site of the monument. The second team, including Bill Tucker, used the hedges to escape the same tragedy.

After the war, Bill Tucker became a lawyer, part of the Kennedy administration and co-founder of the C-47 Club. He has often returned to this location and together with the C-47 Club erected this memorial for his fallen comrades.
