Less than three weeks after the Armistice in 1918, a dramatic accident occurred on the Groenstraat in Lede, in the aftermath of the war.
For the three brothers Adolf (11), Clement (17), Alfons (20) Rasschaert and their cousin Hector (13), Saturday November 30, 1918 meant the end of their early lives.
The Germans were rather careless with ammunition and left a lot behind.
They found German shells on the Aalst-Ghent railway line. An attempt to extract the explosives failed and they paid for it with their death.
