In Memoriam: Sgt. Edward Mons Wilson 23rd Hussars, 11th Armored Div.

On September 21, 1944, a violent battle took place between Rullen and Gerwen between the 23rd Hussars and the German 107th Panzer Brigade. A British reconnaissance vehicle and two English tanks were destroyed in this battle. One of the tanks burned out completely. An English soldier was taken from this tank by residents of Gerwen and buried in the field at the Huikert there. During this fight, 23rd Hussars had also 10 wounded.
In October 1944 an unknown Englishman was listed by the 3rd Graves Registration Unit of the 2nd British army. On December 30, 1947, the remains were exhumed by the 55th GCU (Grave Concentration Unit) and buried in the churchyard in Mook. Recent research has helped this stranger rediscover his name, Edward Mons Wilson.
