In Memoriam: Lancaster ED-307 KM-R crash site

At this location in the Pastoorsmast at the current Helmondweg-Smits van Oyenlaan intersection, a bomber, the Lancaster Mk1 ED-307 KM-R of 44 Sqdn, crashed on 29 June 1943. One of the propeller-driven engines of this aircraft was located along the Eeneindseweg (now Lyndakker). The aircraft was part of a group of 608 aircraft that had Cologne as their target. Of these, 25 aircraft did not return. This Lancaster was one of them. They were shot down by pilot Major Günther Radusch, Stab II./NJG 3 who intercepted them with his Messerschmitt Bf 110 from Venlo. The entire crew was killed.
