The memorial commemorates the fallen soldiers of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, named after Princess Patricia of Connaught.
The unit came under heavy fire from the Germans during the retreat of the Second Battle of Ypres in early 1915 and only four officers and 150 soldiers survived.
The monument was inaugurated in 1985 and received an additional plaque commemorating the regiment's 50th anniversary. A maple was later planted behind the monument, a reminder of the maple leaf in the Canadian flag.
