During the first days of the invasion, numerous atrocities were committed by the Germans against the civilian population.
In the evening on August 22, 1914, 17 men were arrested to fetch wood and water for the German troops in the forest.
On August 23 at 5 am, the 17 men are shot.
The Calvary crucifix is dedicated to them.
