Memorial Executed August 1914

Commemorative plaque on the facade of the chapel "Notre-Dame du Luxembourg" in Breuvanne in memory of those who were killed in August 1914.

The fierce fighting of August 22, 1914 was one of the bloodiest episodes of the frontier war.
In the vicinity of Rossignol and Tintigny, the Germans encountered the French IVth Corps. This corps consisted in part of colonial troops from Algeria. To halt the advance of the German troops, the French opted for the counter-attack. The Battle of Rossignol was defeated and the Germans murdered 122 civilians. They were first held in a meadow outside the village. From there they were taken to Arlon where they were shot without mercy at the railway bridge.
