Traces Fighting Liberation Brecht

On the wall in this street you can still see impacts of bullet points and shrapnel from the fighting during the Liberation of Brecht. By placing a frame and an information board around it with the necessary symbolism, you get a special monument.

You are here in front of one of the last traces of the Second World War that are still present in the Brecht street scene. This war memorial is a symbol of all the human suffering and material damage caused by the fierce fighting. No less than 2/3 of the buildings in our municipality were damaged! The greatest damage was caused by the numerous artillery bombardments that took place on Brecht soil between 23 September and 20 October;
Brecht was on the front line for almost a month!

In the garden across this street, no fewer than 122 bomb craters on an area of 1 hectare were counted. The historic building "Sint-Huybrecht", the current Kempisch museum, was hit by 23 shells.

This wall still bears the scars of these shelling. We see the numerous impact sites of bullet points and shrapnel. Imagine for a moment that you were here during the fighting.

The blue horizontal rectangle refers to the badge of the first liberators of Brecht. For example, the soldiers of the Canadian 2nd Infantry Division wore a blue horizontal rectangle on their sleeves.
