Dutch War Graves Catholic Cemetery Oudewater

The RK cemetery in Oudewater contains a number of graves of Oudewater residents who died during World War II:

A collective grave of three forced labourers who died in Germany. These are A.M. Bode, A. Koops and F.J. Klomp, all three died in Sindelfingen. This place was heavily bombed at the time because of the presence of large Mercedes factories.

On row B17, next to each other are the graves of Peter Frans van den Ende and Gert Schoonderwoerd.

Peter Frans van den Ende had gone into hiding near Oudewater to escape labour recruitment. There he became a member of the Internal Armed Forces. During an attempt on 5 May 1945 to stop Dutch Waffen-SS men near Snelrewaard, a firefight ensued in which he was fatally hit.

Gert Schoonderwoerd was a greengrocer from Oudewater who was killed near Nunspeet on 24 February 1945 after coming under fire from English fighters. The lorry he was driving was probably mistaken for a German vehicle. Gert was there on one of his many trips to collect foodstuffs for the Oudewater food kitchen."
