Memorial Explosion of Ammunition Depot 27 April 1918

This memorial plaque is located on the side wall of the Holy Family Church in Brandhoek:

"Explosion of ammunition depot Galgestraat, Brandhoek, 27 April 1918.

During the spring offensive of 1918, on April 27, six members of the Deplaecie family were killed in an ammunition explosion in the Galgestraat: Henri (55 years old), Jeanne (12 years old), Irma (9 years), Marguerite (4 years), Julien (2 years) and Nera (6 months). This is the only place where they are commemorated in name.

At least 50 British soldiers were also killed. There were also dozens of wounded, civilians and soldiers. 20 British dead belonged to the 10th Battalion Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment who had been near their rest camp. The victims are buried at Red Farm Military Cemetery, Hagle Dump Cemetery and Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No3 in Brandhoek. A number of them were not given a known grave ".
