Flooding of Kattesas Nieuwpoort

The first experiments for the flooding of the Yser plain were done here on the Kattesas.

Text info board:
In the night of 26 to 27 October 1914, the first attempts were made to flood the Yser plain with this lock. Karel Cogge from Veurne, Captain Thys and a few soldiers carried out this. The area between the Yser and the Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide railway verge was demarcated by the army on the instructions of Karel Cogge. The water supply turned out to be too low. The advance of the German army finally came to a halt when the supply of water from 29 October onwards succeeded better via a shortcut the Noordvaart (Veurne Ambacht) due to the contribution of Hendrik Geeraert from Nieuwpoort, captain Umé and a few soldiers.
