Here on the spillway of the Noordvaart, on October 29, 1914, the gates were opened that marked the start of the flooding of the Yzer plain.
Text info board:
After the preparatory work between the Yser and the Nieuwpoort-Diksmuide railway embankment, a start of more efficient flooding was finally made possible via these gates on 29 October 1914. Skipper Hendrik Geeraert (after the war lock master) from Nieuwpoort did this with captain Umé and a few soldiers. Due to the urgency, the army command eventually gave permission to enter this danger zone.
