Cycling route Death Valley De Peel - Liberation Monument Mierlo (#2)

Liberation memorial Mierlo

"Those who keep the peace deserve freedom," goes the saying on this monument, unveiled in 1994 to mark 50 years of liberation. The parts of the monument have a symbolic meaning.

- The semicircle represents the society affected by violence and grief from war.
- The fence refers to the victims who have been deprived of their freedom and in some cases of their lives.
- The column with sundial refers to the sun, which with a spark of light can give joy and make life more pleasant again.
- The unexecuted semicircle represents the uncertain future, over which we have no control.

In 2019, 75 years after the liberation, the monument was expanded on the initiative of Heemkundekring Myerle. A plaque commemorating all civilian casualties from Mierlo and Mierlo-Hout has been placed on behalf of the municipality. This has created a permanent memorial place for the residents of Mierlo who had to pay for the war and the liberation with their death.
