Under the old city of Maastricht you can find some old fortifications and about 12 km's of corridors. At the beginning of WW2, a part of this underground system is transformed into air raid shelters for the civilians of the city of Maastricht. They made seats, lighting system, air systems and toilets for the people to stay underground. There was a capacity for 25.000 citizens and was used several times during war. The shelter museum can be visited every third Sunday of the months of March through October from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. During the months of November through February, they are closed.
