Statue Savings Hands Nieuwpoort

In the vicinity of the Albert I monument in Nieuwpoort is the statue "Saving Hands by the sculptor singer Willem Vermandere. This artwork symbolizes gratitude for the British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in World War I, but also for the oppressed and refugees in the world. The idea is borrowed from the British artist David Bomberg (1890-1957) who around 1917 designed a memorial for his friend Lieutenant Thomas Ernest Hulme who died on 28 September 1917 in the vicinity of Nieuwpoort. His design depicted a bent soldier with the words "Private T.E. Hulme. "He died for Honor and Freedom." The design of this memorial hangs in the nearby Western Front museum.
