This Canadian Maple was planned on September 1, 1984 as a tribute to the Canadian units that liberated Newport.

This Canadian maple was planted on September 1, 1984
as a freedom tree to commemorate the liberation of Nieuwpoort
on September 6 and 9, 1944
by the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division,
more specifically the "12th Manitoba Dragoons"
with the support of the "Essex Scottish Regiment"
and the local resistance fighters.
