On the 14th of November 1940, Coventry was bombarded by approximately 500 German bomber aircraft. Because the city’s factories were located in the heart of the city, the bombardment took the lives of 554 people. This city’s historic centre was completely destroyed, including St Michael's Cathedral. Postwar a new cathedral was built next to the ruin of the first cathedral. The ruin serves as a memorial.
