In 2019 it was 75 years ago that Belgium was Liberated by the allied forces.
In this context, Tourism Province of Antwerp organized various activities related to the Liberation in collaboration with Liberation Route Europe. Together with the participating cities and municipalities, a themed brochure with local stories supplemented with photos was made. Information boards were placed at 48 historical locations, each with a local theme.
Theme Arendonk: Children are not spared.
This information board tells the story of four-year-old Gerard Koninckx who died of deprivation during the fighting around Bridge 5 in September 1944 when his parents and their children had to take shelter for days in a cellar in appalling conditions.
