Tank casemate Haalderen

In the Bemmelse Waard are remnants of the IJssel Line, a defense work from the Cold War. Tank casemates were part of this IJssel Line; buried tanks, three of which are still present in the Bemmelse worth.

During the Cold War, the US Commander-in-Chief Eisenhower devised a plan to build a defense line in the Netherlands. It was called the Assellinie and was supposed to stop, or at least delay, an invasion from the east (the Russian zone).
The casemates in the Bemmelse Waard are Sherman tanks that are buried on a concrete foundation. The line with the tank casemates was in use from the 1950s to the late 1960s.
