In front of the church and the war memorial in Saint-Médard are two minenwerfers.
Minenwerfer ("mine launcher") is the German name for a class of short-range mortars, short-barreled throwing guns, widely used during World War I by the Imperial German Army.
The weapons were intended to be used for painstakingly destroying defenses and obstacles, including bunkers and barbed wire, because longer range artillery was unable to target so accurately.
