Monument Train Shooting Hattemerbroek

Hattemerbroek and surroundings were under heavy fire during the Second World War. On this spot, along the Oude Kerkweg, in the morning of 20 June 1944 the train from Groningen to Utrecht was shot at by allied airplanes and forced to stop. Passengers hurriedly left the train and sought a safe refuge in the rye field, but were hit by bullets. There were dead and wounded. Residents saw terrible scenes and heroically gave first aid.
