War Memorial Tintigny

The monument to the 2 World Wars is in the forecourt of the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church.

In August 1914, the Battle of the Borders was the first general confrontation of the Great War. Germany violated the neutrality of Belgium, to attack the French army from behind and push through to Paris.
On August 4, the country was attacked by a German army superior in all respects (size and armament). In Belgian Luxembourg it was the French who opened the attack through Joffre on 22 August and met the Germans here in the Ardennes.
In three days, 70,000 soldiers from both camps were put out of action.
The war was very violent for the armies that clashed from Maissin to Baranzy, but also for the civilians in Anloy, Longlier, Rossignol, Tintigny, Ethe, Porcheresse, etc. Arbitrary executions, looting and destruction of villages, deportations and occupation of 4 years had to be passed.

This monument is dedicated to the residents of Tintigny. It contains the names of 46 civilians executed by the Germans in August 1914; of 3 soldiers who died for the fatherland; of 4 deportees and 2 resisters executed (the Collard brothers).
The decision to erect a memorial dates back to 1919, but it was not until the early 1930s that the monument was erected. It is the work of the Brussels sculptor Jean Canneel and the architect of Arlon, Lamy.
After 1945 a commemorative plaque dedicated to the Hunters of the Ardennes was added to the monument.

On the back wall "To our heroes and martyrs", followed by all the names.
In front of it stands a beautiful statue of an old man telling the story of the war to a little boy sitting on his lap.

To the left and right of the monument hangs a plaque for the Ardense hunters:
left: 4 names according to grade: "1940 - 1945 died for the fatherland"
right: 4 names according to grade: "1940 - 1945 died for the fatherland"
