Commemorative Stone Firt World War Wagnée

Memorial stone along the road:
"To the dead of August 23, 1914"

Wagnée was one of the villages within the area where the Battle of the Borders was fought in August, a series of battles between German and French army units.

At the battle of Wagnée 170 German soldiers and 285 Belgian and French soldiers are said to have fallen. Initially they were buried in Wagnée but later their remains were transferred to other military cemeteries.

In 1922, the French authorities decided to transfer the bodies of their soldiers who had died in the region to one cemetery, that of the "Belle-Motte" in Le Roux.
In 1956 the remains of the German bodies were transferred to Vladslo for those whose identities were known, while the anonymous dead were buried in the mass grave at Landemark.
