The "Monument to all Ghent dead from 1914-1918, Honor to lost comrades-in-arms", was realized by sculptor Olivier Piette, on the initiative of the National Fighters Union, the Circle of Friends of the Officers and the National Association of the Invalids.
It was unveiled, in the presence of King Albert I, on October 26, 1924.
A life-size bronze female figure honors the dead. She wears a soldier's helmet with a laurel branch on her right arm.
There is a rectangular, bronze relief plate on the base. A seated, naked man with a shield mourns his struggle.
At the very bottom it says in Dutch and French:
"To our fellow townspeople
killed for the Fatherland "
