Also in the region of Libramont, in August 1914, the first general confrontation of the Great War took place, which was later called the Battle of the Borders.
The front line stretched between Beauraing and Arlon along the French border.
Joining the war was a surprise for Belgians. In fact, the country was neutral and the invasion of the territory by the German troops was a real violation. Germany passed through Belgium to attack the French army from behind and push through to Paris.
The war was very violent for the armies that clashed from Chiny to Maissin, as well as for the civilians of this region. Arbitrary executions, looting and destruction of villages, deportations and 4 years of occupation had to be endured.
