Fort Saint-Eynard is part of Grenoble's fortified belt. The fort is located at 1,338 meters above sea level. It is located near the town of Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpe region.
Fort Saint-Eynard was built between 1875 and 1879 by Richard de Régnauld de Lannoy de Bissy. The fortress was built on the models of the defense system of General Séré de Rivières.
The buildings cover more than 65,000 square meters and it was home to about 500 soldiers and 25 pieces of artillery.
In the Second World War, the fort was occupied by the Italians after the armistice in 1940. In 1942 it was handed over to the Vichy government and occupied by the Germans after the Allied landing in Italy in 1943.
