Tomb Lieutenant Valeran Van De Kerchove D 'Hallebast

Tomb of Lieutenant Valeran van de Kerchove d 'Hallebast in the Betekom cemetery.

In the morning of August 26, 1914, watchmaster Valeran van de Kerckhove was mortally wounded during a reconnaissance operation between Laak and Demer by a bullet fired from a German ambush. The watchkeeper would die the evening of the same day in a field hospital in Betekom. The body was buried in the local cemetery.

After the war, his mother had a cross erected where her son died. She had a crypt placed in the cemetery in which both parents and a brother were buried. The memorial was moved to the new cemetery shortly after the Second World War.
