Liberation Monument Oedelem

At the Sint-Lambertuskerk is a monument to the liberation of Oedelem by the Canadian South Alberta Regiment in 1944.

In the front above the coat of arms hangs a plate:
"To our liberators
In gratitude
September 12, 1944 "

At the top right hangs a memorial plaque:
"In appreciation
The South Alberta Regiment of the 4th CDN ARMD DIV
and 10th CDN INF NDE wants the mayor,
council members and citizens of Oedelem and the surrounding area.

During the Battle of September 1944, some witnessed the destruction of tanks while the crews were mowed down in search of cover.
The SAR had 38 victims including 11 dead.
The SAR will be eternally grateful for your memory of this struggle and your continued support "

At the bottom of :
"Part of the tank with which the Canadians liberated Oedelem"

A tank of the South Alberta Regiment was shot to pieces in Oedelem. Jozef Vincke restored the shackle on the monument at the time.

The designer and sculptor of this monument is Karel Van Roy.
