Top Side Fagpole Corregidor

Perhaps at the emotional center of Corregidor is the base flagpole belonging to a Spanish war ship that spans both the 1898 Spanish-American War—in which the Americans took possession of the fortress island—and World War II, during which the United States lost (1942) and recaptured (1945) the island from Japan. At each critical step, flags were run up and down the flagpole, depending on the fortunes of war.

James Bradley’s The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War makes for useful background reading when thinking about Corregidor, and its many landlords.
