The location of the cemetery dates to World War I, when there was a radio transmitter on a nearby hill that was fought over when the Australians came ashore to conquer Rabaul from the Germans.
This memorial commemorates the first Australian war dead of the First World War: Able Seaman WGV Williams, Able Seaman JE Walker, Captain BCA Pockley AAMC, Lieut Commander CB Elwell RN, Signalman RD Moffat, Able Seaman HW Street. Apart from Signalman Moffat (who is buried at sea), the others are buried in the war cemetery.
