Crash Site Kawanishi Seaplane Gasmata

This aerial picture shows the southern coastline near Gasmata on New Britain, an island in Papua New Guinea. It was near this picture that Lt.(jg.) Joseph Ellicott USN, commanding PT 131, won the Silver Star for shooting down a Japanese four-engine seaplane (either a Kawanishi H6K or H8K) .

His citation reads:

"For gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of a Motor Torpedo Boat during combat patrols in New Britain from March through December 1943. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service."

Note the thickness of the jungle cover, even in this photograph from the air, on New Britain. Gasmata is inaccessible to outside visitors, except those who come with their own boats.
