The 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment landed here at 8.30 AM on 15 February 1945. The regiment, based at Mindoro, was transported by 317th Troop Carrier Group. Prior to the invasion, the island of Corregidor was bombed by B-24's with 500 lb. bombs.
A number of paratroopers missed the drop zones and landed elsewhere. Some of them were rescued near Wheeler Point. Not a single paratrooper drowned. Although the attack surprised the remnants of General Tukada's Kembu Group, a fierce battle for Topside between the paratroopers and the entrenched Japanese defenders ensued almost immediately. Pvt. McCarter was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during this and the following day.
