Baron Andries Jan Jacob Destombe (1787-1845), also known as Destombes, Des Tombe and popularly known as De Stoomp, was appointed commander-in-chief of the Maastricht fortress in 1841. In this position he succeeded the controversial General Dibbets, who died in 1839. Destombe had already had an impressive military career when he started his work in Maastricht at the age of 54. He had served in the Batavian and French armies, was a member of the Légion d'Honneur, was appointed baron in both Napoleon's empire and the Dutch kingdom and had risen to the high military rank of lieutenant general. He had earned his spurs in the Battle of Waterloo (1815) and in the Ten-Day Campaign (1831). He was unable to fulfill his function in Maastricht for a long time because he died suddenly on February 18, 1845 and was buried three days later with military honors in the cemetery on the Tongerseweg.
On October 28, 1925, the remains of Destombe made a true triumphal procession through the city center of Maastricht on the way to the Waldeck Park, where he was reburied under great public interest and with military honors.
