Fort Hughes

Fort Hughes was established on 31 January 1913 as part of US Army's harbor defense of Manila Bay, and is named in honor of Major General Robert Patterson Hughes.

It garrisoned men of 59th Coast Artillery, 91st Coast Artillery and 92nd Coast Artillery. On 6 May 1942, the fort, together with Corregidor, surrendered to the Japanese Imperial Army.

Fort Hughes saw heavy fighting in 1945, when 38th Infantry Division tried to recapture the island from entrenched Japanese forces. The last defender was killed on 13 April 1945. It was heavily bombed during the war.
