Paul H. Decroix was a pilot of the Belgian 349 squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF). The squadron followed the advance of the Allied troops and on November 2, 1944, 349 ended up at Maldegem airfield in Belgium. The next day an order followed to attack German artillery in the vicinity of Klundert.
Around 11 o'clock in the morning, the Spitfires flew north in formations of two planes. Several military vehicles were attacked south of Klundert, among other things, by a German tank. The Germans fired on the Spitfires with their anti-aircraft guns (the so-called FLAK) and two planes were shot down. One of these was Paul Decroix's Spitfire.
