The Citadel of Diest was built between 1837 and 1844. It housed a garrison of 600 to 800 soldiers. From 1896 the citadel functioned as a fortified fortress. The citadel was home to the 1st Battalion Para for over 150 years.
The citadel was twice used as an internment camp, namely during the First World War as a Zivilgefangenenlager and after the Second World War as a camp for German prisoners of war and Belgian collaborators.
