Crash site Mitchel MK II.
This Mitchel bomber of the 98th squadron had the mission to bomb the power station in Langerbrugge. Over Belgian territory, the aircraft was attacked by a German Focke Wulf 190. The left engine caught fire, after which the pilot flew back to the coast. Above Maldegem, the pilot lost control of the aircraft. One of the crew members can still jump out of the plane, but he falls to the ground. The other crew members crash along with the plane.
The crew was buried at the Municipal Cemetery in Maldegem.
