On the building of the "Mountain of Mercy of the City of Brussels" hangs a commemorative plaque:

The Mountain of Mercy is perhaps the oldest official and financial institution in Belgium. It is the only institution in Belgium that is authorized to lend against collateral.
It is a public institution with a social character whose purpose is to grant nominal loans against pledge of value and movable property and to organize exhibitions and public sales.
The Mountain of Mercy primarily has a social role that prevents it from having a profitable purpose.
