Crashlocation Vickers Wellington Mk 1C Near Keelven Someren

On 27 December 1941, the six-man crew of the Vickers Wellington Mk.1c number Z 1098 were on their return from a bombing raid on Düsseldorf along with 131 other aircraft.

Shortly before crashing in the Keelven near Someren, the aircraft was intercepted and attacked by a Messerschmit BF 110 of the second group Nachtjagdgeschwader 1.

The Vickers Wellington Mk.1c number Z 1098 was part of 57 squadron, RAF base Feltwell, Norfolk.

Of the six crew members, five were killed: T. Purdy, age 28 United Kingdom, M.J. Cronin, age 21 New Zealand, R.S. Scarlett, age 27 Australia, W.J. Poulton, age 26 United Kingdom, R.F. Aldous, age unknown United Kingdom. The sixth crew member, S. Barraclough (age unknown), from the United Kingdom survived the crash and was taken prisoner of war
