Maria Bell Arcen

Text on the monument:

"The Maria bell placed above - weight approx. 1000 kg - was cast in 1681 by Petrus van Trier. This bell founder also cast the Adreas bell, inside the church, front right near the sacristy.
On November 23, 1942, the Mariaklok was confiscated by the German occupiers. The skipper, who was in charge of transporting the bell, managed to prevent this bell from being melted down into weapons. He sank his ship with the bronze cargo.
After the war, the clock was fished out again and hung in the tower again.
Unfortunately, this beautiful clock was damaged beyond repair in 1984. Thanks to the efforts of the 'Klokke Drie' working group and with the help of the entire Arcen community, this old clock could be replaced in 1987 by a new Mary clock. On December 23, 1989 - the 30th anniversary of the consecration of the Church - the old clock was unveiled as a historic monument."
