The Mine Lookout Service (MUD) was established in 1949. Concrete poles were used, about a hundred of which were placed on dikes and dunes along the Westerschelde. Popularly called MUD poles, but officially they bore the name Pelorusstand. A pelorus is a simple nautical aiming device. This was placed on the pole. In 1974 the MUD was abolished and the posts fell into disuse. Most of the poles have been removed at dike elevations.
