World War II Memorial Garden

Located in between the Cox Administration Building (in photo) and Finney Chapel on the Oberlin College campus, this small memorial garden remembers 75 alumni of Oberlin College who were killed in action in World War II. The memorial was planned in 1995 (50 years after the end of the war) and then built in 1997. Those remembered served the US and other countries, including one alumnus who served in the Japanese navy.

The text on the wall reads:

TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF OBERLIN COLLEGE WHO AMONG UNTOLD MILLIONS
LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945. THEY PAID THE ULTIMATE COST OF WAR.

DEDICATED WITH LASTING RESPECT AND APPRECIATION BY THEIR FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES, WHO AFTER FIFTY YEARS STILL REMEMBER.
MEMORIAL DAY 1996

IT IS NOT ENOUGH JUST TO REMEMBER … THEIR LIVES IN A SENSE WILL CONTINUE AS THEY ARE FULFILLED THROUGH YOU.
PRESIDENT ERNEST HATCH WILKINS - MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE 1946
