In front of the memorial is a tile with the names of the ten inhabitants of Westmaas who died in the Second World War. The best-known name is that of Johannes Kolff, who was involved in the robbery of the detention center in Leeuwarden.
In August 1941, all the men of the village had to gather in the nearby public school square. The Germans were looking for the people who had helped the crew of an English plane that had landed near the hamlet of Greup. Sometime later, five men, known as the Five of Greup, were shot.
