At 01:04 on 29 September 1944, the Mosquito MM646 RS-R of the 157 Squadron of the Royal Air Force had taken off from RAF Swannington Air Base (Norfolk) for a low-altitude attack flight to Münster, Achmer, Verden and Hesepe in Germany. On board were Flying Officers Peter William Fry and Harry Smith. They were surprised by a night fighter who shot them down around 03:00 am after a short dogfight over Southeast Drenthe. Their Mosquito crashed here. Both crew members were killed. They were buried on October 2, 1944 at the General Cemetery in Geesbrug.
Placing the sign is an initiative of Hideout Museum De Duikelaar and St. Garrison City Fortress Coevorden, and the sign was created in collaboration with the Foundation for Air War Research Drenthe.
