In Courville-sur-Eure there is a monument to the First World War with the names of the victims:
"To the kids
from Courville
died for France.
1914 - 1918 "
In the battles of 1914 and 1915, 21 Courvillois were killed.
As early as 1916, the city council decided to erect a monument to those who died for the fatherland.
In 1919, when there was peace and the soldiers had returned home, the architect Henri Guittet of Chartres was asked to submit a project.
The monument was officially inaugurated on May 8, 1921, the feast day of Joan of Arc.
The original monument featured a soldier at the top.
When the city was occupied by the Germans in 1940, this statue was removed.
In 1954 a stone urn was placed at the top as a replacement.
