Lieutenant Lowry was an airborne observer and was shot down with his pilot during a reconnaissance flight during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive near Crepion. Originally buried in Argonne Cemetery, but in 1921 he was transferred to Fairmount Cemetery, close to the former military airfield named after him: Lowry Field.
A memorial to his memory has been erected at the Fairmount Cemetery, and around the memorial are World War I veterans who are also commemorated on the memorial.
