At Dachau concentration camp, the SS managed Europe's largest herb garden, referred to as Die Plantage. This consisted of several greenhouses, a research and teaching building, and arable land. The facility at Dachau was intended for experiments in biodynamic agriculture and the development of medicinal herbs to make Germany self-sufficient in this field.
The malnourished and weakened prisoners who were employed in the gardens and greenhouses for maintenance work had to work hard and continuously for hours regardless of the weather conditions, without protective clothing and under the supervision of cruel SS guards.
The site is ruined and not freely accessible.
