Statue Andreas Hofer

Monument on the Kalvarienberg for Andreas Hofer.

Inscriptions on the pedestal:
Andreas Hofer - °22.11.1767 +20.2.1810 in Mantua
The Tyrolean freedom fighter built by the Kufstein municipality, made by sculptor Theodor Khuen and art caster Selzer.
Inaugurated on 11 July 1926 together with the chapel and the war memorial. "

Hofer was a Tyrolean innkeeper who in 1809 became the leader of the Tyrolean Revolt against the revolutionary Napoleonic invasion.
In the liberation struggle of 1809 Hofer led the Tyroleans to a victory over the French troops of Napoleon Bonaparte three times.

As a result of the Austrian defeat in the War of the Third Coalition, Tyrol had been under Bavarian rule since 1805/1806. On April 9, 1809, a revolt broke out, with Hofer taking the lead. On May 25 and 29, the insurgents at Bergisel were victorious.
This was followed by the armistice of Znaim, during which Tyrol was again occupied by Napoleon's troops. Again the call to battle went out among the peasants of Tyrol and again they won a victory.
After that Hofer sat as Commander-in-Chief of Tyrol in the Hofburg of Innsbruck.
The Peace of Schönbrunn prompted Hofer to revolt again, but this time it ended in defeat at the Bergisel.
A renewed call to take up arms was met with little response.
Andreas Hofer had to flee, but after betrayal was captured by the French on 28 January 1810 at the Mähderhütte of the Pfandleralm (a mountain meadow).
Shortly afterwards, he was executed by firing squad.

Andreas Hofer is still revered today as a folk hero, freedom fighter and Austrian patriot. He was against the aggression of France and Napoleon.
Every year on February 20, he is honored as the hero of the fatherland.
