From 1937 through 1938, an airfield was built in this area, named after 2d LT Francis Lowry who was the only Colorado pilot to die in World War I.
This was a training site and crews were trained here to bomb targets.
From 1943 there was training here with the B-29 Superfortress.
Bomber crews were trained there until 1956 and from 1956 up to and including the mid-1960s, missile specialist training was provided here. The base has been inactive since 1994 and currently there is a residential area. Some remnants of the base are still visible, such as the hangars that now house the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum (hangar 1). In Hangar 2 are now restaurants and a school located.
