STOLPERSTEINE / STUMBLING STONES
2 Stolpersteine have been placed in Assen for:
Herman Levie b. 1865 murdered October 26, 1942 Auschwitz
Reina Levie b. 1871 murdered October 26, 1942 Auschwitz
The German artist Gunter Demnig started laying the first Stolperstein in 1997 in Berlin's Kreuzberg district.
Stolpersteine are already available in many countries.
It is a reminder of the Holocaust in World War II.
A Stolperstein is a concrete stone of 10 x 10 cm, with a brass plate on the top in which the name, date of birth and death and the place of death are punched.
The Stolperstein is placed in the sidewalk in front of the victim's former home.
In this way Gunter Demnig gives each victim his own monument.
His motto is: 'A MAN IS FORGOTTEN IF HIS OR HER NAME HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN'.
Borne was the first place in the Netherlands where Stolpersteine were laid.
This happened on 11/29/2007.
